How To
"Rolled" Pillowcase

This is a wonderful method for making pillowcases with no exposed seams.

Supplies for a standard size pillowcase:

The yardage below assumes at least 42” of useable fabric selvage to selvage.

3⁄4 yard - 27” strip x width of fabric pillowcase fabric *
1⁄4 yard - 9” strip x width of fabric edging fabric
2” strip x width of fabric accent fabric
neutral color cotton thread

*Note:  substitute 1 yard - 36” x width of fabric if making king size pillowcase

1.    Press the 2” strip of fabric down the length wrong sides together.  The strip will now be 1” wide x width of fabric.

2.    Layer the 9” strip of fabric right side up, the 2” folded strip, and the 27” strip right side down, matching the raw edge of all layers.

3.    Now the tricky part – take the bottom edge of the pillowcase fabric and gently fold/roll up towards the edges you aligned in step 2 until you can see the edging fabric underneath.   Fold the bottom of edging fabric up towards top keeping the pillowcase fabric rolled inside and match the raw edges.  Carefully pin in place taking care to not catch the pillowcase fabric.  Sew this seam with a 1⁄2” seam allowance.

 4.    Remove all pins and reach inside the “roll” to turn inside out.  Your seam will now be on the inside!  Press the accent fabric toward pillowcase fabric.  Be sure seam is flat is both sides of pillowcase.

5.    Fold pillowcase in half wrong sides together and square up raw edges.  Pin and stitch the side and bottom with a ¼” seam backstitching at the beginning and end.  Clip off the excess fabric from corner.  Turn pillowcase inside out so that the wrong side is now facing out.  Press taking care to not press any pockets into seam.  Now stitch the side and bottom again with a ½” seam allowance, again, backstitching beginning and end.  This will enclose your raw edges inside the seam allowance.  Press and enjoy!
